Exploring the notion of repeating the past in the present: Temporality in psychoanalytic psychotherapy
Abstract
From within psychoanalytic psychotherapy, this paper explores the experience of temporality, specifically from within the phenomenon of repeating the past in the present, a Freudian phenomenon termed ‘repetition compulsion’. I adopt two main analytical concepts to navigate such an exploration: the ‘return of the repressed’ and ‘potential space’. I suggest that ‘repression steals the future’ because it holds the present prisoner of the past. In terms of ‘potential space’, future-time is understood as new possibilities, and ‘the past as arrested potential’. I also suggest that the experience of future-time, as central to the therapeutic process, attempts to shift the experience of the present as a ‘repeating past’ to one of an opportunity for healing and ‘moving forward’. I locate these ideas in the consultation room and make use of the process termed - the ‘corrective emotional experience’ - as a mechanism for re-framing the present as a repetition of the past and for grasping future-time. I present a short clinical case to illustrate these suggestions.
The self in prejudice
Abstract
The self as a psychological construct, and the self in relation to the other has been discussed in psychological and sociological literature for decades, but not much attention has been given to the psychological development of the self in relation to the social construction of prejudice. The primary aim of this article is to explore the self in prejudice and thus the psychological processes involved in the development of self within the social context. I use the conceptual framework of Kohut’s Self psychology as a lens to present the development of the self. I present the idea that prejudice is an outcome of self-definition in the context of the other, and I link self in prejudice and group dynamics to Attachment theory and the notion of ‘selfgroup’ in terms of overidentification with the in-group.
